5 Easy Steps for Surviving the Holidays
by Rick Mayo
The average weight gain during the holidays is 5 - 7 pounds! If you don't want to end up looking like Santa, you need to take a few precautions. A realistic goal would be to maintain your current weight and fitness levels throughout the holiday season. These five tips will help you minimize any damage:
1. Eat Two Dinners
Before you leave for that big holiday party, eat a small meal that contains a portion of protein. That will stabilize your blood sugar and help to curb your appetite. Once you reach the party, you'll be less likely to gorge yourself on fatty finger foods and you will be more apt to make healthier dinner choices.
2. Party at Your Place
Hosting the holiday party will give you the freedom to choose which foods will be served. There is a low fat alternative to nearly every dish these days. Try www.cookinglight.com for some great ideas.
3. Pick up the Pace
Since weight loss is a function of creating a calorie deficit, you may need to increase your activity level. Walking just 30 minutes a day will burn an extra 7,750 calories in the month of December. That is 2 lbs that you won't have to lose in the coming year. (If your in-laws are visiting, you can walk for hours and burn lots of extra calories.)
4. Count Your Drinks
Most people forget to account for their alcohol intake when they are counting their calories. If you plan to do some serious partying, you will need to sacrifice in other areas. Just skip desert and you should be fine with a few extra drinks. Don't drink heavily on an empty stomach at the company party! (No explanation needed.)
5. Don't be Afraid of Commitment
Join a class or hire a trainer to help you stay committed during the busiest time of the year. When you are pressed for time, working out might be the last thing on your mind. Exercise will not only help you look your best but it is a great stress buster. Make a little time for yourself and you will have a wonderful holiday season! If all else fails, we will be here to help whip you back into shape!
