Come Monday
by Rick Mayo
Haven't we all used that phrase when it comes to our dietary and workout habits? We make promises to ourselves about our behavioral changes on a Friday afternoon and then use that as an excuse to go "hog wild" over the weekend. This same scenario is often used for January 1st.
I polled Good Bodies' clients, and it seems the average weight gain during the holidays was 3-5 lbs. Not too bad, but we all know how much work it is to change some of those bad habits we picked up in December. Well, you say, how shall I go about making this year's fitness resolutions a reality? I thought you'd never ask!
1. Commitment:
Make it known to friends or family members that you have goals and that you intend to reach them. Making yourself accountable to others is a powerful motivational tool!
2. Put your money where you mouth is …or isn't:
Placing a friendly wager with friends from work or family members about fitness goals can be fun and sometimes lucrative! Have each person put money in the pot and the ones who reach their goals can divide the winnings amongst themselves. Beware of "doughnut sabotage" at the office.
3. Get uncomfortable:
Plan an athletic event or vacation that will make being out of shape feel less comfortable than doing the work necessary to achieve your goals. You don't want to run a 10k without any training right? How about going to the beach with the neighbors or jumping in the hot tub on your ski trip? Ouch! Better get to work.
4. Hire a trainer:
A good trainer can help you establish goals and hold you accountable. Studies have shown that people who exercise with trainers are 3 times more likely to succeed than those who exercise alone! Be candid with your trainer about your expectations and then follow the program that they design. Your trainer can be your greatest asset in making your resolutions a reality.
5. Don't be Afraid of Commitment
Join a class or hire a trainer to help you stay committed during the busiest time of the year. When you are pressed for time, working out might be the last thing on your mind. Exercise will not only help you look your best but it is a great stress buster. Make a little time for yourself and you will have a wonderful holiday season!
If all else fails, we will be here to help whip you back into shape!
So this year when you say, "Come Monday…", you'll mean it!
